Four Girls Band ?Rising Moon in the Forest?
Established in 1998, the members of the Four Girls Band have the highest educational level among Chinese ensembles. All members are conservatory-trained and veterans of top orchestras: two of them have earned Master's degrees and the other two are working towards theirs in the Central Conservatory of Music and the China Conservatory of Music.
Hailing from the People's Republic of China, the Four Girls Band have placed 1500 years of Chinese musical tradition into a modern framework. They play classic instruments such as gu zheng (ancient zither with movable bridges and 16-25 strings), pipa (four-stringed lute with pear-shaped body), yang qin (Chinese hammered dulcimer with a near-square soundboard) and erhu (two-stringed Chinese fiddle). Their goal is to develop "New Fine Arts", or modern classical Chinese music. The group's appeal is broad-based, they are equally popular with children, teens, adults and even grandparents who all fill entire arenas to see the Four Girls Band on stage. In their 6 years of history, the band have performed in many countries. They held 13 concerts in 7 cities in the United States in 2002 and visited the Scandinavian countries in 2003 to participate in the "Chinese Cultural Week".
For those who believe in the power of music to bring people on this planet closer together, the Four Girls Band will be a driving force from one of the world's oldest cultures. Their voice has been heard loud and clear and their beautiful music will extend a hand across the ocean.
