Doris Kareva

The Estonian poetess and translator Doris Kareva has published a number of poetry books that have met with wide acclaim and reaped a number of various awards. Her work has been translated altogether into 15 languages. Doris Kareva’s poetry has been compared to the temple bringing together the human and the divine, the soul and the universe, the word and stillness, Eros and Thanatos. Her last poetry book ”Mandragora” (2002) inspired the theatre director Jaanus Rohumaa of City Theatre to stage a play by the same name. Ms Kareva has translated poetry, essays and plays by Anna Akhmatova, W.H. Auden, Samuel Beckett, Joseph Brodski, Emily Dickinson, Kahlil Gibran, Shakespeare, Marina Tervonen and others. In 2003, the publishing house "Huma" brought out a book of the mystic poet Kabir’s verse translated by Ms Kareva.
